Joshua Chapter 9

In last week’s lesson God's chosen people, the nation of Israel, by the leadership of Joshua, went up and took the city of Ai. We had seen them earlier fail in their attempts to take it, first due to not seeking God in how to take it, and secondly, due to the sin in the camp due to Achan. But when they humbled themselves, sought God's design on how to take the city, God gave Joshua a plan. They used a group led by Joshua to trick the King into chasing the small group, while the larger groups lay in wait to storm and take the city by ambush. As always, when the people did things God's way, it was a perfect plan that turned out successful.

Josh 9:2 That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

In the first two verses we see the kings of the countries there in Canaan coming together and forming a federation to fight against Joshua and Israel. When we set out to do God's Work, particularly when we do it God's way, we are normally confronted by many a foe. The world is against God's people, and we need to understand that. As Jesus warned the disciples, to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.

Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Eph 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
